Notes and inscriptions
A Prospector's Map (The Brine Pan)
A map wrapped in oilcloth: every salt seam marked, and one skull drawn where the canyon narrows. Under it: do not dig here, it is still asleep.
The Herders' Count (The Brine Pan)
Chalked on a rib: the herd that crossed the flats, counted morning and night for ten days. On the last day the count goes up by one.
A Salt Wife's Note (The Brine Pan)
Weighted with a stone: the brine pan gives back what it takes, given time. Wait for the dry season.
A Prospector's Map (The Canyon of Bones)
A map wrapped in oilcloth: every salt seam marked, and one skull drawn where the canyon narrows. Under it: do not dig here, it is still asleep.
The Herders' Count (The Salt Flats)
Chalked on a rib: the herd that crossed the flats, counted morning and night for ten days. On the last day the count goes up by one.
The Quiet Canyon
A side canyon the herds never found. Its walls are carved with animals, hundreds of them, each the size of a hand, and at the foot of the last panel someone has carved a little figure with a stick, counting.
The Salt-cutters' Cave
A cave the salt-cutters dug to rest out the noon heat. Their picks still lean on the wall, and a ledger on a ledge counts the blocks cut, the days of rain, and one line: the herd came back.
The Salt-Road Ledger (The Salt Flats)
A page of tolls: one cask of salt for passage, two for a cart, three if the cart had a goat in it. Nobody wrote down why the goat cost extra.
A Drover's Rib-Bell (The Canyon of Bones)
A copper bell tied to an old rib. Canyon drovers hung them on the great bones so they could find the way home in a dust storm, and so the bones would have something to say.
The Painted Herd (The Great Mesa)
Water runs down the dry rock and old paint comes up through the dust: a herd of great horned beasts, and a small figure with a light walking among them.
The Herd That Went (The Salt Flats)
In the spell's shadow the salt shows what the sun hides: the tracks of a whole herd, pressed into the crust long ago, all going one way, toward the brine. They did not come back.
The Bone-carver's Hoard (The Canyon of Bones)
Behind the cracked face, a niche of little carved animals in bone, a dozen of them: a hare, a heron, a lizard, each with a name scratched under its foot.
A miner's tally, in bone ink (Deepdelve)
The living tire, strike and leave. The dead never do. I gave them work they cannot refuse and a purpose they never had. Is a grave so much better? - W.
A Seat by the Road (The Canyon of Bones)
A bench cut from a single great rib. Below, the canyon opens toward the Minehead, and the salt shines like a lake that is not there.
A Shelter on the Road (The Salt Flats)
A lean-to of rough timber and a fire ring still warm. Scratched on the post: Two days to the brine. Drink before you think you need to.
