Difficulty
The six difficulty settings, from Cozy to Impossible.
Accurate as of version 1.0.8.
The difficulty is chosen when a new journey begins and cannot be changed afterwards. Finishing on a harder setting does not award the achievements for the easier ones.
| Setting | Starting hearts | Heart pieces add hearts | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cozy | 8 | Yes | Wick starts with eight hearts. For taking in the story and the world at your own pace, with plenty of room for mistakes. |
| Normal | 5 | Yes | The journey as it was made to be played. Wick starts with five hearts and finds more along the way. |
| Hard | 3 | Yes | Wick starts with only three hearts. Every blow counts until you find more. |
| Very Hard | 1 | Yes | Wick starts with a single heart. Heart pieces still add hearts, if you live long enough to find them. |
| Insane | 1 | No | One heart, for the whole journey. Heart pieces never add a heart: each one only heals Wick. |
| Impossible | 1 | No | Any hit is a fall, and a fall is the end. There is no torch to return to. A creature Wick defeats never comes back, and the way to the end stays shut until every last one is gone. |
Impossible
Impossible is its own game. Any hit is a fall, and a fall erases that journal for good. There is no torch to return to. Every creature Wick defeats stays defeated, and the way to the end stays shut until every last creature and guardian in the land is gone. The pause book keeps the count.
