Game overview
What the game is, its story set-up, and how the world is laid out.
The End of Magic is a top-down action adventure from Missing Page Studios, in the tradition of the classic overhead Zelda games, and made to be hard. It is in Early Access.
The story so far
Magic has taken over the world, and it is used mostly for evil. Each land is ruled by a wizard who has grown greedy on it, and the Iron Reeve keeps Wickmoor under his chain and taxes its lamps.
Wick is an old wizard who can draw the magic out of things, "like a thread out of a sleeve". The journey begins in Lanternfold, the night the Reeve's men come for the lamp tax and Wick takes their magic away from them. Pip, an orphan of the town with no magic at all, sees it happen. The wizards he faces knew him once, and they have plenty to say about a man who collects their spells as he goes.
Pip follows him from town to town, stowing away, and draws the map as they go.
How the world is laid out
- Wickmoor is the start, in the centre, with the home town of Lanternfold.
- Ring 1 surrounds it: The Rimewold (frost, north), The Stormcoast (lightning, east), Ember Reach (fire, south) and The Bonelands (earth, west).
- Ring 2 lies beyond: The Unbound Heights (arcane), The Tidelands (water), Sunward (light), The Scour (wind), Mirewood (poison) and The Gloaming (shadow).
- The Aura Wastes lie at the edge of the map and open only when all ten element wizards have fallen.
It is one open world: every land is reachable on foot. Spells, not walls, decide where you can go. A door, a bog or a fallen bridge that will not move today will open to the right spell from another land, so the map is full of places to come back to.
