The Rimewold

A frozen land of snowfields, a frozen lake and a glacier of blue glass. The Rime Prior has stilled it: half the people of Hearthwick stand frozen where they were when the cold came down the hill. The Frozen Gorge in the west is shut behind a frozen fall until fire thaws it.

The Wind-scoured Shelf

A shelf of old ice beyond the gap, scoured clean by the wind. A herder's cairn stands at its end, and wedged in it a tin with a tally of every storm that crossed the glacier in one winter. Forty-one. Someone has added: and I saw them all from here.

The Herders' Cold Store

A hollow cut back into the rock, cold as a cellar. The herders kept their winter cheese here, wrapped in cloth, each wheel marked with a family's sign. One shelf is still full.

The Ice-Fisher's Tally (Rimewater)

Scratched on a seal bone: forty-one fish, one boot, one very surprised seal. The last line, in another hand, says: 'Kell, stop eating the tally.'

A Priory Bell-Note (The Glass Glacier)

Brother Aldric rang the low bell at dawn for sixty winters. When his hands went stiff, the whole valley learned to wake up on its own, and grumbled about it for years.

The Frost Moot (The Frozen Gorge)

Seven stones in a ring and one turned the wrong way. Under it, scratched in the frozen ground: the herders met here every midwinter to share out the grazing. The turned stone was whoever lost the argument that year.

A Seat by the Road (The Glass Glacier)

A flat stone worn smooth by sitting. From here the snow runs out toward the Rime Priory, and the wind brings the sound of bells.

A Shelter on the Road (Hoarfell Steppe)

A lean-to of rough timber and a fire ring still warm. Scratched on the post: Rest here. The cold waits for you; it is patient.

Hidden things

Some spots answer to the right element. Cast it there and something comes back.

• Bellholm (Fire): The ice melts back from a niche in the wall. Someone meant to come back for it.
• The Frozen Gorge (Force): Seven stones in a ring and one turned the wrong way. Under it, scratched in the frozen ground: the herders met here every midwinter to share out the grazing. The turned stone was whoever lost the argument that year.
