Saltlurker

Something wide and flat with a mouth full of salt-white teeth that lives under the crust of the flats and grows new crust over itself as it goes. You only see it when it bites. Water dissolves its crust and leaves it bare.

How it fights

Bubbles creep under the salt toward you - it is hunting under the crust - and a crack runs out to a spot just ahead of you, where it expects your next step to land. Then it snaps up through the crust there. It always aims at where you are heading: stop, or turn aside, and it snaps at empty salt.
