The Tidelands

Notes and inscriptions

The Harbour Book (The Sea-gate Store)

Racked behind the sea-gate, the harbour master's book. Every ship in and every ship out, for a hundred years, and in the last pages one line repeated in a shaking hand: the light holds.

A Smuggler's Tally

Scratched on the cave wall: forty casks, nine bolts of silk, one bell (cracked). Under it, in another hand: the bell is not for selling.

The Keeper’s Log

The tide-keeper kept this hut through forty winters. The last page: the sea froze once in my grandfather’s time, and he walked out to the bell rock and rang it. I would like to see that.

The Keeper's Tally (The Dark Lighthouse)

Light fills the foot of the lighthouse. Chalked on the wall, a keeper's tally of every ship the light brought in: rows and rows of it.

The Gull's Crew (The Gull's Ribs)

Wind clears the sand from the stern board. Burned into the wood: the Gull, out of Saltmere, and the names of her crew, every one of them come home.

The Sunken Bell (The Tidepool Shore)

The old tide bell, sunk to its rim, rings once under the spell, though nothing touched it. Cut round its lip: Rung for every ship the dark brought home. The Starwatch keepers made it.

The Diver's Locker (The Kelp Deep)

The cracked rock comes apart around a small iron box, crusted shut but dry inside: a diver's log of depths and dates, and a drawing of a fish no one has named.

A tide-table, written over (Saltmere)

The sea took my village when I was a girl, and no one asked it to stop. So I learned to ask it myself. Now nothing drowns unless I choose. They call that cruel. It is the first mercy this coast has ever known. - T.

A Seat by the Road (The Reef Flats)

A driftwood seat above the tide line. The shallows run on toward the Dark Lighthouse, and the light on them never keeps still.

A Shelter on the Road (The Tidepool Shore)

A lean-to of rough timber and a fire ring still warm. Scratched on the post: The tide turns at dusk. Wait for it here.

Hidden things

Some spots answer to the right element. Cast it there and something comes back.

  • The Dark Lighthouse (Light): Light fills the foot of the lighthouse. Chalked on the wall, a keeper's tally of every ship the light brought in: rows and rows of it.
  • The Gull's Ribs (Wind): Wind clears the sand from the stern board. Burned into the wood: the Gull, out of Saltmere, and the names of her crew, every one of them come home.
  • The Tidepool Shore (Arcane): The old tide bell, sunk to its rim, rings once under the spell, though nothing touched it. Cut round its lip: Rung for every ship the dark brought home. The Starwatch keepers made it.
  • The Kelp Deep (Force): The cracked rock comes apart around a small iron box, crusted shut but dry inside: a diver's log of depths and dates, and a drawing of a fish no one has named.
